Power Bar for Your Home: What It Is and How to Choose One

A power bar is a rail fixed along a wall, counter or cabinet that lets you plug in wherever you need a socket. You may also hear it called a power track, an e-bar or an electrical power bar; the names all describe the same idea. This guide explains how the rail works, where it fits at home, and how to choose the right size, adaptors and installation, using figures from our own product specifications.

A power bar is a wall-mounted rail with sockets you can add, move and remove along its length. Choose one by its depth and length, the adaptors you need, the total load it will carry and its Safety Mark, and have it installed by a qualified electrician so the wiring at the end terminal is done correctly.

How a Power Bar Works

The track carries power along its whole length, and each socket is an adaptor that clips into a groove and twists to lock. Because the adaptors are separate from the rail, you place a socket exactly where an appliance sits, and move it when the room changes.

That is the main difference from fixed wall sockets, which stay where the electrician put them on the day of the renovation.

Power Bar or Power Strip?

A power strip is a portable block of sockets on a cable that plugs into a wall socket. A power bar is fixed in place and wired in, which keeps the floor and the wall sockets clear. Our article on power tracks, power strips and power rails compares the three in detail.

Where a Power Bar Works Best at Home

The places our customers choose most often are the living room, the kitchen, the study room and the master bedroom. In a living room, a rail behind the television console keeps the screen, the speakers and the router on one neat line. In a study, a track along the desk gives a socket for each charger and monitor.

The kitchen is where the rail earns its place quickly, because small appliances change position with the task. Our kitchen power track guide covers placement along the backsplash and the load for a busy counter.

Choose the Depth and Length of Your Power Bar

Depth decides how the track looks on the wall. Our SLIM surface track is 86mm wide and 19mm deep, and our Pro surface track is 88mm wide and 29mm deep, with room for HDMI, Ethernet and USB connectors.

For length, measure the stretch of wall or counter you want powered. Our SLIM Series comes in 50cm, 75cm, 100cm and 150cm lengths, and our Pro Series in 60cm, 80cm, 100cm and 150cm.

Plan the Adaptors and the Load

Each of our UK adaptors is rated at 13A and takes one appliance. One metre of our track supports up to 11 adaptors, and the total power draw of everything plugged in should stay within 8,000 watts. Before you plan a busy counter, add up the wattage printed on each appliance’s rating label.

Check the Safety Mark

In Singapore, the Safety Mark must be affixed on controlled goods that have been tested and certified to the relevant safety standards. Ask for the registration numbers of any rail you compare. Ours are 220001-00 for the tracks and 220002-00 for the adaptors.

Price and Installation

Our tracks start from S$147 for a 50cm SLIM Series length in a standard colour, and our power track price guide shows how the track, the adaptors and the installation add up. Standard lengths take 3 to 5 working days to prepare.

Installation needs an electrician for the connection at the end terminal. When you buy from us, our own electrician and contractor install it for you.
